Vientiane, Lao PDR — The ASEAN-JICA Food Value Chain Development Project (AJFVC) and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) successfully concluded its on-site Training Course on Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqP) in Vientiane, Lao PDR for its ten fisheries officers from 10 to 14 August 2026.
The five-day intensive training course combined technical lectures with interactive practical fieldwork, focusing heavily on freshwater fish and giant freshwater prawn (GFP) production. This focused on key areas of responsible farm management, biosecurity and disease control, climate change resilience, and food safety. The participants also completed practical sessions on feed formulation and preparation, pond water quality instrumentation, and procedures for collecting and sending freshwater fish and GFP samples for laboratory diagnosis. These sessions translate scientific principles into sustainable local farming practices.
The course concluded with an open forum and closing ceremonies, which equipped the fisheries sector of Lao PDR with the vital field skills necessary to align local production with regional ASEAN safety standards. In time, this alignment strengthens the country’s inspection mechanisms, upgrades local food security, and positions Lao PDR to confidently participate in the wider ASEAN food value chain.
